Den første museum i Thailand blev etableret af kong Rama IV (1851-1868). Kongen brugte to bygninger i Grand Palace at holde sine private antikke samlinger. Den første offentlige museum blev åbnet i 1874 under Kong Rama V regeringstid i en bygning med navnet ”Sala Sahathai Samakhom” beliggende i distrikt af Grand Palace. The Museum was relocated in 1887 to its current location.
